Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We meet at 7pm, the first Thursday of each month at the American Legion, 522 W. Saratoga, Shawnee, OK.  Visitors are welcome.
Each guild meeting includes a program about some facet of quilting.  We also have a business meeting, refreshments and "Show & Tell".
A time for quilters to stand up in front of the group with their latest project.  It is very inspiring to see all the different ways people use fabric.
Yes!  Quilt guilds are not just for professional quilters!  Our group has sewists at all levels.  We like to learn new ways to improve our skills.  We will not be criticizing your creations.  Additionally, SSQG hosts quilting workshops throughout the year.  Topics vary but teaching is offered at all levels.

Check the calendar for the next workshop.

Come to a meeting and fill out our short Membership Application.  Membership dues are $30 per year, due in October.
Quilt Camp is a mini retreat where members set up their sewing machines, bring whatever project they want to work on, and sew together all day.  Then go home to sleep in their own beds. Three to four times a year SSQG rents the Masonic Lodge in Shawnee for this day camp.  Friday and Saturday members can sew from 8 am to 8 pm, Sunday from 8 am to 5pm for $10 each day.  It's a come-and-go-as-you-please event.  We typically have a potluck lunch on Friday & Saturday.  It is so much fun to gather together with other folks who love to quilt.  We laugh, ooh and ahh each other's creations, and build lasting friendships.
A group of quilters that meet at the Shawnee Senior Center Wednesday mornings 9 am to sew together.  This is not an official group of SSQG, but many of our members participate.  Because they meet at the Senior Center, you must be 55 or older to attend.
The guild Vice President plans programs and books speakers.  If you have an idea for a program, speaker or workshop please contact the current VP.  The board members are listed here.  You can also send an email to info@shawneespinningspoolsquiltguild.com
We are planning our next quilt show for late summer/early fall of 2028.  If you are interested in being involved in the planning process, please email info@shawneespinningspoolsquiltguild.com
Quilting has a lot of jargon, abbreviations and terms.  If there's something you're not sure of a guild meeting is a great place to ask.

WOF = Width of fabric, meaning from selvedge to selvedge.

RST = Right Sides Together, meaning put the pretty sides of the fabric together.

HST = Half Square Triangle, this is a type of quilting unit or block used in lots of patterns.  Here's a tutorial for making HSTs.

FQ = Fat Quarter, a piece of fabric that is 18" x 21".

Jelly Roll = A collection of 2.5" fabric strips, rolled neatly together to sort of resemble a cinnamon bun or jelly roll.

Nested Seams = This method of aligning your seams so that they are pressed in opposite directions helps corners and points line up nicely as well as keeping your block laying flat.  See this short video for a demonstration.
